Fishing safety

Fishing is the UK's most hazardous industry, with more than 20 deaths every year, most of which are due to flooding, capsize or man overboard.

The RNLI works to make fishermen more aware of the dangers they face, and how to minimise risk. We have seen a steady rise in fishermen wearing lifejackets while working on deck, and great improvements in safety awareness. We continue to develop new ways of helping fishermen stay safe on the job.

Survive! is the fisherman's ultimate survival guide.

The RNLI has stopped taking new orders for MOB Guardian because:

  • The EFF subsidy ceased to be available after 31 March 2012.

  • We believe the majority of fisherman who wish to fit this important piece of safety equipment have already done so.

  • The large investment necessary to support a new sales and marketing effort can no longer be justified and the RNLI must use charitable donations prudently.

  • Since the introduction of MOB Guardian, a much wider selection of affordable safety products which do not require satellite airtime packages have become available.

The decision to stop selling the MOB Guardian has no impact on current users. Please note:

  • The RNLI is committed to supporting MOB Guardian and all vessels will continue to benefit from monitoring and emergency alerting via MOB Guardian until at least 31 March 2017.

  • All vessels fitted with MOB Guardian purchased up to 31 March 2012 will receive their 5 years free airtime package and will benefit from MOB Guardian until 31 March 2017.

  • The current levels of customer support including all warranty/ non warranty repairs will continue as normal until at least 31 March 2017.

A safety success story

Over 500 vessels have been fitted with MOB Guardian in the UK and this has resulted in five lives being saved and assistance given to many other vessels who needed to raise an alert as a result of an urgent problem. The RNLI acknowledge the enthusiastic support of all UK Government administrations via EFF and FIFG that has been key to the success of the MOB Guardian. Approximately 1,500 fisherman will continue to be protected by MOB Guardian. For more information, contact us by phone on 01202 663142.

I have MOB Guardian fitted. Will I continue to be monitored by the RNLI and able to send emergency alerts?

Yes. The RNLI is committed to fully supporting MOB Guardian until at least 31 March 2017.

If my airtime package expires prior to 31 March 2017 will I be able to purchase additional airtime?

Yes. Additional airtime will be available on an annual basis to enable the operation of MOB Guardian until at least 31 March 2017.

If my MOB Guardian system requires repair will I still be able to organise this?

Yes. All units will continue to receive full warranty coverage and for non warranty repairs contact AST as normal on 08718 118200.

If I require technical or operating help will this still be available?

Yes. MOB Guardian will continue to receive full customer support so please call the help desk on 08718 118200.
